GENERAL NAME: Samantha Sweeney NICKNAMES: Sam, Sammy, Sweets AGE/DOB: 16 - April 5, 1998 BLOOD STATUS: Half-Blood GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female : She/Her SEXUALITY: Pansexual. She literally does not care what your gender is. If you’re hot, you’re hot. HOMETOWN: Queens, New York
CONCEPT: Traumatized teen plays educational catch-up; hopefully learns some stuff.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Sam has definitely toned down her wardrobe this year. She's less in-your face about it, focusing far more on her education and friendships than on her wardrobe. She is more likely to be caught in jeans, t-shirts, flannels, etc than her old-style babydoll dresses and fishnets. She wears her uniform skirt a little too short still, adds some flair when she feels like it, and occassionally does her make-up. Sometimes its pretty, sometimes it's still quite grunge and looks like she slept on it (which she might have).
HEIGHT: 5’6”
PB: Kaya Scodelario
PERSONALITYLIKES: Loud music, parties, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, coffee (black), tea, cookies, movies, people, crowds, noise, any kind of music that gets you to dance, dancing, honesty, philosphy, defense against the dark arts, dry land, gossip, shit-talk, contests and competitions, gambling, being better than someone else DISLIKES: Dedication, commitment, silence, grades, detention, people who are stuck up, people who take stupid things too seriously, or take themselves too seriously, wet blankets, party poopers, people who are shy or lack self confidence, water, pools, lakes, ghosts, etc. PERSONALITY: The Samantha from yesteryear was outgoing, unafraid, and lacked self-control. She was non-committal and didn't seem to care about anything. After what happened at the end of her sophomore year, a lot of things have changed. Her personality had already started to shift when she met Solomon, but not knowing what to do during the kidnapping of all her friends by Anon, almost drowning, and spending the summer in a far more humbling place than her own home - Samantha's got a different look on life and a slightly less annoying presonality to boot.
She's still a bit back-handed, she can still be intimidating. She's sarcastic as ever and enjoys a good tease now and then. However, she no longer thinks people who care about school are nerds. Samantha is a lot less likely to tear someone down for being studious or judge someone who spends all their time in the library. Although still a partier - true to her Azurcrest nature - she is definitely planning on spending a lot more time studying this year than last. Once a dedicated troublemaker and pot-stirrer, Samantha is still just as into trouble as ever. However, unlike before where she'd throw herself in to any situation with reckless abandon, she's more likely to carefully consider and weigh the pros and cons of a situation before she gets herself into one. Knowing full and well that her act-before-thinking nature both helped her save Solomon and almost got her killed, she's a bit back and forth on it. She still wants to try everything at least once, but you can often catch her actually thinking about her actions far more than she ever did.
While "Flightly" may have been her previous and most apparent Azurcrest quality, it's shifted. She used to be so dedicated to that party-animal, flighty, and stereotypical version of Azurcrest that her true Azurcrest qualities never really got to shine. The more calm and goal-oriented Samantha is definitely fun-loving by nature, easy-going, and can bring the enthusiasm to any situation. Given how serious things were before, she may be a little too much of a ra-ra, let's go kind of person now, but it works for her.
These better qualities, however, are still reserved for the few people she calls friends. Making friends is still important to her, but not her number one priority. It's not like her trust is shattered or anything - really, she's far more trusting of her classmates now than she ever has been. However, Samantha can still be off-putting. She's got a general attitude and resting bitch-face that makes people automatically dislike her. The penchant for sarcasm and eye-rolling - her safety net for so many years - are hard to break habits that may keep new friends at a distance, and leave her old friends and acquantainces unconvinced of her changing for the better.
SKILLS LANGUAGES SPOKEN: Aside from English, Samantha is fluent in Portugese and Spanish. Her mother is Portugese an it was her first official language learned at home, so Sam grew up speaking both. She's learned to be fluent in Spanish through it's similarities to Portugese and through Solomon's help. Due to having a deaf classmate, she is also learning some sign language but is not fluent.
PATRONUS: Samantha cannot currently cast a Patronus. It is now one of her main focuses of learning now.
SKILLS: Samantha is not the most skilled person on the planet, or even close to that. She can cook decently well both the no-maj way and using wizard-spells, she is a great swimmer and can hold her breath under water for a decently long time (a feat she is not wanting to test ever again). She's mildly athletic, but not particularly amazing at any sport - however, running and swimming are definitely her strong suit.
HISTORYFAMILY MEMBERS: Alexander Sweeney : Prosecuting Lawyer w/ MACUSA Carolyn Sweeney née (OPEN - Portugese Surname) : New York Representative for MACUSA.
Enid Carroway : Nanny and companion growing up.
HISTORY:
Privileged. Yeah, she is definitely that. Her parents were workaholics, but they were also incredibly loving and spent a lot of time with her. They were hover-parents in the sense that if anything went wrong, they would fix it. The kind of people to talk to a teacher if she failed or got a bad grade because obviously it wasn’t her fault, right? Sure, she had a nanny her whole life, but her parents were constantly around as well. The nanny was back-up - long nights and urgent meetings meant that all their free time with Samantha could be interrupted at any moment. Not wanting her to miss out on events or have to go home from a trip early, Enid was there to pick up the slack running for MACUSA Representative and earning a stunning reputation as a Prosecutor tended to accrue.
This gave Samantha an inflated sense of self. She went to school at Covenstead, so she didn’t have to board and it was the right kind of prestigious for Alexander and Carolyn. As a little kid, Samantha showed promise. She was very talented in her classes, originally driven by the need to impress her parents and their friends. She was easily caught up in all the things that came with having powerful parents. Her talent only made her head inflate a bit more. Really, she probably would have ended up completely different if she hadn’t of fallen in with the Wrong Crowd. At a MACUSA party (one of her favorite things, parties!), she met a couple older kids who thought she was a bit older than she was and invited her to hang with them. Not wanting to seem uncool or unimpressive, she did everything they did - including smoking pot and drinking.
And that was it. She wouldn’t ever call it a dependency issue, but she liked feeling cool with the older kids and it never seemed like the parents cared. Except hers. They started watching her like a hawk, stifling her and it only made her rebel more. She didn’t want to be held back by all their stupid rules anymore, she wanted to have fun. She wanted to grow up to be like those kids. Her parents tried everything - she was under constant progress reports in her now failing classes and her parents watched her as much as they could. It was infuriating and caused a lot of tension between parents + only child.
Finally, they gave up. They couldn’t watch her 24-7 and they didn’t want to. They wanted her to straighten up her act, be the impressive and well-mannered child they thought they had raised. So they sent her off to Gooseberry. A lot of strings had to be pulled for that one, but your mom being the NY Representative for MACUSA came with a lot of benefits and good connections. Some money exchanging hands, promises of she’ll do better, she has a lot of promise, etc were what got her into Gooseberry, where her parents didn’t have to think about it. They figured nothing at all could possibly keep her on the same wrong-track at Gooseberry than there was in a day school - even as prestigious as it was.
However, that wasn’t necessarily true. She went kicking and screaming to Gooseberry but quickly found it had its benefits. There were rules, sure, but there were a lot more ways around the GB rules with the help of older, very helpful and devious students. Her desire to have fun won over any competitive spirit or perfectionistic tendencies that might have drawn her to Ebonhide or Coppertale, and Azurecrest provided a good place to find out all the school’s more elicit and fun activities. She nearly flunked out her Freshman year, but pulled p a basic C average at the last minute.
Sophomore year was much the same. She got a clique of friends, parties galore, fun activities abound - but she’s barely passed most of her classes. Near the end, she definitely stepped up her game so she didn't flunk out of school. All was going relatively to plan until half the student body was kidnapped by Anon and she, along with quite a few of her classmates, were sent into some weird alternative-universe of Gooseberry and sent on a mission to save them all from dying a slow, exposure-related death. The events of that have wholly changed Samantha and her personality. She watched her friends be terrified and get hurt, she almost drowned, she was saved by her classmates, and she found and saved Solomon - only to almost lose him being tricked by a ghost. She realized very quickly that her education was extremely sub-par and that learning all the shit they do was, in fact, incredibly important.
So summer brought opportunities to grow, change, and re-invent herself. She spent the entire summer with Solomon, point-blank refusing to leave his side while they both recovered from their trauma. She was reassured by him and humbled by his life in Honduras. The two grew very close and his generally positive outlook on life rubbed off on Samantha. Coming into hear junior year, Samantha is prepared to fight the good fight and really dedicate herself to learning and studying. Passing all her classes with more than all C's is the bargain she struck with her parents to return to Gooseberry.
SCHOOL YEAR: Junior HOUSE: Azurcrest SORTING: Her sorting didn’t take all that long. Sure, Ebonhide and Coppertale had strong points to make - She was a bit of a perfectionist, and she definitely liked to win and has a ton of confidence. They argued for a while, but Azurecrest was going to win this one. There wasn’t even much needed to be said. The fun-loving nature of Azurecrest reall spoke to desire to have fun, and that was that. WAND: Mahogany with Kneazel Whisker core, 10” and springy FAMILIAR: None CLASSES: Charms, Herbology, Hermeticism, Potions, Transfiguration, Artificing, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Outdoor Exploration ADVANCED STUDY: None. SENIOR PROJECT: Although now waffling on her original idea, for lack of better ideas Samantha is still planning on making a line of magical beauty products. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Much better. Samantha has seriously dedicated herself to studying and getting good grades. Her best class by far is Defense Against the Dark Arts. It’s the most practical class and she likes learning the spells and finds it the most interesting. Her worst class is Hermeticism, not because it’s not that interesting but because it’s difficult and she’s struggling with the concepts.
EXTRACURRICULARS: Archery, Dueling and Fencing, Gaming, Event Committee, Crafting Club
